The other morning, it might have been Friday, Doug had to wake up super early to help out with some special event at Austin High School. I tried to remain unconscious while he got ready and mostly succeeded. Later that morning while making the bed and tidying up our room I noticed one of my candles that I keep along the tub in the bathroom was upside down on our bedroom floor. It surprised me because I was pretty sure Matthew couldn't reach those candles. He is the obvious suspect for out of place items like that. I picked it up and found a cockroach clinging to the side of the candle. It appeared to be dead and felt relief that finally Doug had managed to kill a bug in our house, even if he left it for me to clean up.
But then it wiggled it's antennas. I didn't know what to do with it. Should I just put it outside so that it could reenter our home at some future point with millions of it's offspring? Could I kill it when it seemed helpless? As I pondered what to do with my "present," it seemed to be coming back to life so I simply put the candle upside down on the bathroom counter. After a few moments I decided to put a disposable cleaning wipe over it and smash it with the candle. When I picked the candle up the lethargic cockroach had received a shot of adrenaline. That thing shot across the counter onto the floor and was headed right for me. However, not to be outwitted I threw the wipe on the nasty bugger and smashed him with the candle, as intended. And then I put him in the garbage. Doug called later and I thanked him for my morning surprise.
